Älmhult, Sweden – Ikea is flexing its muscles in the travel market with its newly renovated hotel.
Ikea Hotell, which is fully furnished with Ikea goods, offers a range of low-cost rooms and communal spaces. The company pitches the space as ‘a modern business hotel’, which is disability-friendly and caters for all dietary requirements.
It is based in close proximity to the Ikea Museum in the flagship-Ikea area of Älmhult, and is Sweden's first fully certified sustainable hotel. The recent renovation and rebuild makes Ikea Hotell the largest hotel in the southern Swedish province of Småland.
The self-assembly furniture company has recently invested more than £1.6bn ($2.1bn, €1.9bn) in raising the global profile of Ikea and is planning further investment in the relatively small Älmhult region. Redeveloping the hotel is just one of these ventures. This comes at a time when the brand’s head of sustainability, Steve Howard, admits that the western world has reached peak stuff.
