Pretty penny: Inserting colour into men's loafers

Minneapolis – Accessories specialist Benjo’s has launched a series of smartly packaged pennies in vivid colours, designed to put some spring in the step of classic preppy loafers.

Property developer Ben Hertz originally created the company to sell brightly coloured laces for shoes and boots, inspired by a pair of bold red laces that he picked up in Rome.

Pennies presented a greater packaging challenge than laces, so Hertz looked to Italy once more for inspiration. ‘The matchbook that the penny packaging was based on was found at a favourite Rome restaurant,’ he told Cool Hunting.

Slipping pennies into the diamond cut-outs in classic American loafers was common in the 50s, but it has rarely seemed like a good idea since. Benjo’s pennies, however, may add just the right touch of revivalist flair to conservative business wardrobes.

This is a great example of Revivalism in men’s accessories, and is sure to be a hit with The Turtleneck Club tribe.
