Ian Schrager’s new hotel uses technology to re-invent luxury

15 : 06 : 2017 Hospitality : Travel : Technology

New York – Public, located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, offers a luxury experience at a low price point.

According to Schrager, a pioneer of the boutique hotel concept, the primary idea behind the hotel is ‘luxury for all’, facilitated by the democratising power of technology.

With a focus on value for money – prices start at £156 ($200, €179) – the 370-room hotel features just 50 members of staff, all of whom are trained as concierges, eliminating the need for front of house staff, bellboys and doormen.

Food options include part-grocery store, part-café, part-market Louis and restaurant Public Kitchen, which are both supervised by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Guests check in using iPads in the reception area and use a mobile key to access their room. ‘I wanted to create a hotel for my generation, not my parents’ generation,’ explains Schrager. ‘One that reflected my tastes and sensibilities as well as popular culture.’
