Privacy Pod: designer reveals felt hideaway

UK – For all adults who secretly miss building pillow forts, designer Freyja Sewell has the answer.

Her felt pod, called Hush, is a quiet cocoon where up to two people can hide away from the bustle of everyday life.

‘There are so many ways to connect now. We need to think about how to facilitate privacy within public spaces,’ Sewell tells LS:N Global. According to Sewell, the pods are suitable for work or relaxation and can be used in various environments such as offices, libraries or airports.

Sewell, who introduced Hush during Clerkenwell Design Week 2013, says the playful contours of the pod were inspired by the felt she works with: ‘You have to let it find its own shape,’ she explains.

Each Hush is built from a 10mm-thick piece of industrial wool felt and recycled wool fibres and is manufactured by Ness Furniture in Durham.

Sewell hopes that the pods will foster a sense of privacy in a busy world. ‘It’s important to think about the human as an individual as well as a collective,’ she says.
