International – Electronic music producer and recording artist Calvin Harris is releasing his latest album, 18 Months, free – but there is a catch.
According to social media collective We Make Awesome Sh.iT, which created the app for Columbia Records, the idea was originally a way to escape from a legal bind. ‘Many of the album tracks had already been released as singles,’ says the company. ‘But due to licensing issues there was no way to upgrade to the full album on iTunes.’
This is a novel way for recording artists to create a more immersive listening experience for fans, as explored in our recent Seed story on Gwilym Gold’s new Bronze format.
