Corn craft: Refining inexpensive materials in design

London – As part of the London Design Festival, Gallery Fumi and Studio Toogood last night opened their conjoined exhibit exploring how an inexpensive material can be transformed into a refined piece of design. The Corn Craft exhibition, operating under the creative direction of curator Faye Toogood, considered how corn in its many forms and colours can be a sustainable design material. Participating designers included Raw-Edges Design Studio, Gemma Holt and Nacho Carbonell.

Nacho Carbonell, one of the exhibit’s highlights, put together a sublime material library with an array of samples, which investigated just how diverse a material corn can be. By mixing different types of corn, such as barley, oat and wheat, in varying ratios, Carbonell produced samples ranging in colour, material density and texture. The samples were translated into unique and very tactile pieces of furniture. Corn Craft was an exciting precursor of a new future and generation of sustainable crafts.
