Wellington, New Zealand – Consumers may soon be able to print their own furniture.
Sketch Chair, was conceived by industrial designer Greg Saul. The project explores the ways in which computation and rapid manufacturing techniques can allow users to design and build their own products, in this case their own chairs.
The four steps in the software process, sketch, test, cut and fabricate, enable people to use 2D sketching techniques to create their chair and then translate the sketch into 3D form. The chair can then be printed out or laser cut, ready for assembly. For more on the future of how consumers can print their own products, read our Inform interview with Neil Gershenfeld from the MIT.
