London – Theatre-maker and writer Glen Neath's latest piece will be part of our Disruptors Labyrinth at the forthcoming Global Futures Forum.

  • Neath’s new work, Séance, is a powerful binaural performance given in the dark
  • The work immerses audience members in a pre-recorded séance in which they are ‘visited’ by a medium who seems to whisper into their ears

Séance is a 15-minute presentation of recorded binaural sound, delivered in total darkness. The experience forgoes a clear narrative thread in favour of a 3D audio sensation that makes you feel as though you are immersed in the recording. The soundtrack, which has been pre-recorded using two microphones, is transmitted individually to each audience member.

This is the third time Neath and director David Rosenberg have worked together on a performance piece. As with their previous collaborations, for Séance they have concentrated on darkness and sound, which they have used to replace a physical cast or stage sets.

In an interview with The Future Laboratory in 2015, Neath explained that they wanted to create a performance in which each audience member was his or her own protagonist. ‘It seemed that [binaural] technology in the pitch black would allow us to create a very intimate relationship with every single audience member,’ he told LS:N Global.
