Belgium – Watchmaker Komono has launched its surrealist-inspired capsule collection with a campaign by digital artist and film-maker Mat Maitland.
- The film for Komono x Magritte was directed by Maitland, with animation by Paul Plowman, 3D design by Gary Smith and music by Fred Ball
- Komono is also working with Tomorrowland on a range of sunglasses inspired by Belgium's biggest music festival
To celebrate the launch of its capsule collection inspired by the works of 20th-century surrealist painter René Magritte, Maitland was asked to combine the artist’s universe with his own surrealist vision for a video campaign and series of stills.
Collage artist and film-maker Maitland has re-organised landscapes and motifs from Magritte’s work to create new works. At the centre of the artworks are the watches themselves, which feature the bowler hats, fish, dismembered hands and floating landscapes that appear in many of Magritte’s works.
The Big Picture
Since 2013 LS:N Global has been charting the rise of Futurist Montage, an aesthetic that combines digital and analogue photographic effects and unfamiliar, often surrealist overlays.
