San Francisco – Pioneer of modular electronics Nascent has put product development within everyday people’s reach.
Silicon Valley start-up Nascent aims to reduce technological obsolescence by allowing customers to upgrade, customise and extend the shelf life of their personal technology.
Nascent products require two interdependent parts: modules and shapes. Modules have electronic functions such as an electricity point, camera, GPS, haptic control, LED light, microphone and ambient sensors. Shapes turn modules into usable products by giving them form.
The first three products built on the Nascent platform are now available on Indiegogo: an HD video camera, a wi-fi speaker and Droppler, a device that monitors water usage. These will be joined by a range of other electronics including a smart alarm clock, baby monitor and home drone.
Notorious for its use of planned obsolescence, the technology sector is slowly beginning to embrace modular design. To learn more, read our Growth Products microtrend.
