09 : 05 : 2016 Globalisation : Identity : New York Design Week

New York – Transitions: Migration and Travel is a new exhibition that explores identity and belonging in the age of transient living.

  • Exhibition is presented by Design and Flow as part of NYC x Design Week
  • The aim is to examine the role that design plays in issues associated with globalisation

We live in a period of transition in which movement between places is common and encouraged. This brings with it a variety of complex socio-economic, political and personal challenges.

This two-part exhibition, which takes place in Manhattan and Brooklyn during NYC x Design Week, looks at the identity issues that arise with such transient living, including societal integration, refugees and the need to maintain a connection with native homelands.

Featured work includes Wearable Homes, Mary Mattingly’s wearable individual and communal shelters that examine the importance of architecture in relation to events, places and emotions. The exhibition will also feature a sound design installation developed by Karim Douaidy, You’re Not Supposed To Be Here, which is designed to explore displacement and subcultural belonging through 3D audio composition.

The Big Picture

Increasingly, our identities are being shaped by our transient, borderless way of living. For more, see our macrotrend New Bricolage Living.
