CES: Brush up: Smart dental device debuts at CES

10 : 01 : 2014 CES : Kolibree : Toothbrush

Las Vegas– French startup Kolibree has unveiled what it says is the world’s first connected electric toothbrush at the 2014 International CES.

It analyses brushing habits and sends data wirelessly to a mobile device. Users can then find out whether they are brushing long enough and reaching all parts of the mouth.

‘Instead of waiting for recommendations from a dentist, this toothbrush gives you something day by day that’s going to help you improve your behaviour,’ chief product officer Loïc Cessot tells LS:N Global. ‘We take the data and analyse it so the user can see whether they are progressing.’

The device is designed for families, so parents can monitor children’s brushing habits and even make a game out of brushing thoroughly. Kolibree hopes to get developers involved to turn the data into a smartphone game. But for now the product is in development, expecting to deliver units in the third quarter of this year.

Unlike many electric toothbrushes, the Kolibree model does not have a pressure sensor, but it is easy to see how future models could help hard brushers avoid damaging their gums.
