Vienna – Design collective Breaded Escalope has created a production system that explores how DIY design can revive unwanted furniture.
The Love Me Bender project is a proposal for a system of upcycling redundant household objects. Through a series of live events, the collective showed a process which involved the hacking of tired furniture, using wood bent with steam produced by equipment such as kettles, cooking plates and hosepipes.
‘Love me Bender primarily uses worn-out items as a starting point for refurbishment,’ explains Michael Turkiewicz, one of the founders of Breaded Escalope. ’The process revitalises old and useless furniture to give it a second life and a new purpose after its actual life span.’
The resulting pieces share the hacked aesthetic of our Design it Yourself macro inspire, while improving the functionality of the objects.
