Bristol – Graphic designer Nick Hand has published a book documenting local artists and craftspeople he met while cycling around the UK coastline.
On his travels, Hand met, interviewed and photographed skilled artisans, often working in lost or forgotten industries, including a flute maker and letterpress printer.
Hand has chosen to restrict the selling of Conversations on the Coast to small independent bookshops, deciding not to sell it through chains, or online retailers.
‘We want to support independent bookshops working hard to survive on our high streets, by offering something the big supermarkets can’t,’ Hand says.
Consumers are increasingly interested in the provenance of their products, and are celebrating local producers as a reaction to the mass-market mindset. For more information, see our Patriot Purchasing Micro Trend.
