07 : 10 : 2016 New Lab : Workspace Futures : Workplace Summit Report 2016

New York – New Lab is a shared working space aimed at the science and technology sector.

  • Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the building is home to around 30 tenants including Nanotronics, Jason Krugman Studio and Honeybee Robotics
  • New Lab pitches its shared working spaces as laboratories for the development of growth-stage start-ups

New Lab, which is partially funded by the government of New York City, aims to attract the most promising entrepreneurs to take up residence in the city and breathe new life into its manufacturing industry.

The public-private partnership focuses specifically on emerging technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence and connected devices.

New Lab operates as a sharing economy platform, providing a range of high-tech equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters to its members, many of whom might not have the financial capital needed to purchase the machines outright.

New Lab co-founder and Macro Sea founder David Belt explained to Dezeen that the project stemmed from a desire to provide for a community that is ‘at the top of its intellectual and technological game’ but facing an uphill financial struggle.

The Big Picture

Brands across sectors are tapping into the sharing economy mentality to offer support to under-resourced start-ups. Read our free Workplace Summit Report 2016 to find out more.
