Global – Designer Kim Jones and NikeLab have collaborated on a new range of lightweight sportswear.
Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of menswear Kim Jones is a self-confessed trainer addict. In a recent interview, the designer admitted to owning between 500 and 600 pairs of Nike trainers, which he has been collecting since he was a teenager.
Thanks to the growing trend for luxury fashion and streetwear collaborations, Jones was recently invited to collaborate on a new range, inspired by the products he obsessed over as a youth.
‘I thought: ‘What would these Nike items that I loved when I was a teenager be in 2016?’ That was a nice way of looking at it. It was important to add some personality,’ Jones told iD magazine.
The result is a collection of functional, lightweight sportswear, including windbreaker jackets, shorts and a pair of trainers featuring fluorescent tones that reference the colour palettes of early Air Max shoes.
The luxury lifestyle sub-category looks likely to grow after Under Armour announced fashion designer Tim Coppens as its executive creative director. There is a perceptible feeling of change in the sportswear and lifestyle industries that started with the rise of the Athleisure movement.
