Modular technology

Copenhagen – Take control of your audio experience with the TMA-2 Modular, a customisable set of headphones from Danish designers AIAIAI.

  • Create a highly personal product that meets your specific audio needs
  • Less wasteful than replacing the entire product, the modular design also means the headphones are future-proof

Whether it’s dj’ing at a party or listening on the morning commute, the TMA-2 Modular offers quick and easy customisation with a range of headbands, ear pads, speaker units and cables that combine for the right sound to meet the user’s changing functional requirements. ‘I think that a lot of people want a degree of influence and there is an individualising process in being able to build your own product,’ says Lars Larson, head of design for AIAIAI’s latest headphones. By designing a modular product, AIAIAI is also saving on waste inherent in replacing the entire headphones, and when they arrive, customers will be able to upgrade their equipment with a simple click.

The Big Picture: Modular designs are a reaction against the frustrations of planned obsolescence, particularly in technology. Read our macrotrend The Immortal Brand for more on the rise of heirloom products that grow with you.
