Multi-grain: Japanese chair collection mixes different wood patterns

18 : 03 : 2014 Nendo : Print Chair : Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2014

Tokyo – Japanese design studio Nendo has created a new chair collection that mixes different combinations of wood-grain patterns on timber.

Part of the collection, titled Print Chair, will be exhibited at Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014. The studio experimented with different tones and textures, scanning the surfaces of pieces of wood and then printing the patterns at angles. The wood-grain combinations include fir, pine and oak. One chair mixes an OSB laminate board base with a marble pattern finish.

‘Thanks to printing technology, we could make fine adjustments like the scale, density and colours over and over, bringing out the charm and attraction of natural materials from a variety of angles,’ says a press release from Nendo.

The collection explores new surface treatments for wooden furniture. For more examples of different wood aesthetics, read our Timber Treatment section from Stockholm Design Week 2014. Look out for LS:N Global’s coverage of Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014, 8-13 April.
