Christmas wishes: A digital list for Generation I

25 : 12 : 2013 Digital Natives : Interactive : Kids

Generation I, the youngest wave of digital natives, will probably be the first to discover that there is no Santa Claus by searching for him online. Whether they believe in him or not, members of the screen-swiping, tablet-tapping Generation I will be putting a technology-centric set of gifts on their wish lists this year, while staying true to the rule that all their experiences must be immediate, interactive and intuitive.

First, the under-11s are a generation of hackers who are growing up at the beginning of the third industrial revolution. So let’s pop something on their list that will bring to life their latent creativity. DIY.org is a modern take on the scouting institution, but as well as swimming and tying knots, becoming part of the club will teach them about coding and hacking. Generation I is growing up to be one of the least gender-centric generations ever, so let’s remember that hacking and making isn’t only for the boys.

Today’s parents are more hands on than ever, and if you’re reading this as a proud mother or father of a Generation I child, perhaps you ought to treat yourself to some peace of mind this Christmas, with some hints on Digital Parenting. It’s also important to stay in touch with your young Generation I children as you balance a hectic work schedule and bring home the bacon. This set of communication toys should help.

In terms of good old-fashioned robot toys, no one does it better than Lego, with its Mindstorms EV3. Using the kit, Generation I kids can create programmable creations that can be controlled with a smartphone, another definitive Generation I must-have.

Ask any Generation I children what they want for Christmas, and the likely answer will be an iPad. Here is a rundown of the best children’s tablets in the field, which won’t break the bank and will enable them to be secure online.

Merry Christmas Generation I, from all of us at LS:N Global.
