London – The Stalker autumn/winter line from fashion label Shao Yen is a classic example of our Digital Surrealism trend and the growing influence of Glitch Design.
The collection is inspired by the surrealist avant-garde, citing the iconic black and white films of Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau as the collection’s visual template.
Both the collection and an accompanying fashion film draw heavily on the surrealist experimental tradition and its contemporary incarnation, Glitch Design. The Stalker film features a self-consciously lo-fi, glitch-heavy aesthetic ranging from washed-out tones to disjointed edits, celluloid fuzz and audio distortion.
Taiwanese designer Shao Yen Chen, the creative behind the brand, interprets surrealism’s disjointed imagery and quick edits into a contemporary look. The Stalker collection is an Exquisite Corpse of materials and cuts – simultaneously referencing futurism, children’s cartoons and religious iconography through luxurious materials such as velvet, leather and faux fur.
