Sweden – Swedish housing company AF Bostäder has created an affordable single accommodation unit for students.
The company hopes that the tiny free-standing home, available for rent at SKr30,000 ($4,460, £2,840) a year, will be approved by the Swedish Housing Authority, allowing it to build 100 student houses of a similar size.
AF Bostäder process manager Bengt Persson created the compact house experiment after applying to the Delegation for Sustainable Cities, an advisory council that aims to boost sustainable urban development in Sweden.
‘Sweden lacks 20,000–30,000 student houses to fulfill the current need,’ says AF Bostäder board member Nikolas Theofanous. ‘Because of restrictions the market has to find new ways of building.’
This experiment is another example of how the home is changing. For more insights on the future of the home, read our Future Family macrotrend report.
