Berlin – A new exhibition features everyday materials used in unusual ways.
Curated by creative consultant Sophie Lovell, Freak Show: Strategies for (Dis)engagement in Design at the Helmrinderknecht gallery presents work from a selection of international designers, including Jerszy Seymour, Pieke Bergmans and Dunne & Raby, all of whom aim to challenge the perceptions of design. ‘These ‘freaks’ are turning accepted norms on their heads,’ according to the curator.
Jerszy Seymour for example, is re-assessing materials and shapes with a new ‘alphabet and language’ to examine how industry affects values and social structures. Pieke Bergmans virally subverts mass-production processes, creating a new product world in which mutations and irregularities are the norm, not the exception.
