This platform champions athleticism for girls

19 : 07 : 2017 Fashion : Sport : Wellness

London – Girls Do Succeed celebrates everyday athletes by providing an online community for sporty girls.

Created by stylist and recent graduate Clarissa Henry, the new platform uses various mediums to celebrate sportswomen of all body types who exemplify resilience, boldness and activeness.

Fem-Sport is a documentary film and photo series about the ethnically diverse GDS Girls and their journeys through sport. In addition to the films, the brand has released the online and physical zine Fem-Sport Paper and a clothing collection that includes sports and streetwear pieces.

‘GDS differs because it provides a community and a movement that young girls can feel a part of, relating to images and stories from others girls like themselves, compared to the elite athletes that are featured on other sports and fitness channels online,’ Henry told LS:N Global.

Focusing on how young girls define success in their sport and personal wellbeing, Henry believes the athleisure market is responsible for more girls going beyond the clothing and taking an interest in athleticism. 'Athleisure has also created a new path of womenswear for girls like myself, that are not into the overly feminine styles that are on the market today.’

The Big Picture

  • Female-focused platforms such as Refinery29 are standing up for the under-representation of plus-size women in the media and fashion industries
  • The unstoppable rise of the Athleisure Market is not just about yoga leggings. Consumers are using fashion and online communities to express their sporty lifestyles
