Dealing with Doomocracy

05 : 09 : 2016 Doomocracy : Vote Of Confidence : Dislocated World

New York – A new piece of immersive theatre has been launched on Kickstarter to address the melancholy surrounding the current presidential campaign.

  • The installation, Doomocracy, connects the horror of Halloween with the forthcoming US presidential election
  • The work was created by multimedia artist Pedro Reyes

Doomocracy offers an interactive, immersive house of terrors that explores the ever-diminishing line between the fictional genre of horror and the reality of the world around us. The dystopian vision, commissioned by non-profit-making organisation Creative Time, addresses escalating fears of gun violence, climate change and overbearing corporate influence in the modern world.

Reyes plays on the sense of disenchantment that many people now feel in dictating their own future. The work uses live performance, props and video to present the public with a range of scenarios, demanding decisions from them that will then dictate the path they take.

Katie Hollander, executive director of Creative Time, told LS:N Global: ‘We saw Doomocracy as a perfect catalyst for thought and discussion. We all have our own imagined doomsday scenarios, and for many of us this election season hasn’t curbed those fears very much.’

The Big Picture

As populations become increasingly disillusioned by the powers that supposedly represent them they are turning to grassroots means of seizing back control in the hope of hailing an era of liquid democracy. To read more, see our Vote of Confidence insight.
