London – Adidas has launched a shoe that takes the specific needs of female runners into consideration.
The Pure Boost X trainer features a floating arch designed to improve performance and increase comfort for the wearer.
After analysing how female runners’ feet moved when in motion, the designers noticed that women tended to have narrower heels and higher arches than men, as well as greater variation in the degree of forefoot expansion when striking the ground.
The floating arch caters for the unique characteristics of a wearer’s foot by being able to move while providing support. Coupled with a stretched mesh upper layer, the Pure Boost X has the look and feel of a flexible, sturdy sock. ‘We wanted to create something that felt like a natural extension of the body,’ Ben Herath, design director at adidas, told Wired.
Part of the move towards Neutral Culture is the identification of gender differences and the application of these in product design.
