The art of dining: Pop-up restaurant draws inspiration from Rembrandt

01 : 10 : 2014 New Foodscapes : Pop-ups : Dining

Amsterdam – A luxury pop-up restaurant in Amsterdam has chosen the 17th-century artist Rembrandt as its subject.

Heavenly Rembrandt, hosted in the corporate meeting rooms of Amsterdam’s Rembrandt Tower, is a culinary celebration of the great master’s work. The themed restaurant, a collaboration between the Rembrandt House museum (Het Rembrandthuis), chef Wilco Berends of the Michelin-starred De Nederlanden, and the Rembrandt Tower boardroom, will be open from 22 September to 4 October.

The restaurant serves dishes inspired by Rembrandt’s life and times. A North Sea crab starter incorporates linseed oil, an ingredient Rembrandt regularly added to his paints. A pike perch main course is sourced from the River Vecht, along which the great master used to paint. The chocolate dessert echoes the painter’s palette.

The restaurant will feature works by Rembrandt from the Rembrandt House Museum, and each evening will begin with a brief lecture by the museum’s curator. The experience, which costs €195, includes an aperitif reception and a five-course dinner.
