Monterrey, Mexico – Designers have created a psychedelic, nostalgic identity for Gomez, a friendly neighbourhood bar in the busy commercial district of San Pedro Garza García.
Local firm Savvy Studio based its designs around graphic elements in electric blue. The wallpaper design features a range of seemingly random icons including glasses, a comb, a one-eyed smiley face and the gloved hands of Mickey Mouse.
In their simplicity and sheer randomness, the icons strongly recall 90s-era computer clip art or the Wingdings font. Some references, such as a portrait of a man with an eccentric blue moustache, also reference classic surrealist art.
Designer Ricardo Ojeda of Savvy Studio sees a resemblance to digital iconography, but says that sets of icons are more universal. ‘The idea is to make it friendly and fun – that is where the nostalgic gimmick comes in, and I think it speaks to many generations,’ he tells LS:N Global.
The Gomez identity is a great example of the playful Digital Surrealism design direction.
