Australia – Japanese electronic composer and audio visual artist Ryoji Ikeda has created an audio-visual installation that transforms data into barcodes and test pattern-like lines.
Brands and artists are increasingly visualising data, turning it into graphic formats to extract more meaning, as we reported in our Aaron Koblin: Data Visualisation Portfolio feature. They are also using soundscapes to create immersive experiences, as we revealed in our Seed about Electric.
The installation, Test Pattern [No 5], converts text, sound, photos and films into barcodes and binary patterns of 0s and 1s, creating a projection of flickering black and white images and sound. Using five projectors to illuminate the 28m x 8m space, the installation is designed to be a completely immersive experience, submerging all those who enter it into a world of data and sound.
Carriageworks, ISEA2013 and Vivid Sydney will collaborate to present the piece, premiering at Carriageworks in New South Wales from 8 June to 1 July 2013.
