Takasaki City, Japan – Japanese architectural practice Ikimono Architects has designed an apartment building that encourages neighbours to interact with each other in shared communal spaces.
The Static Quarry comprises eight individual accommodation areas that all look out onto a communal courtyard. The shell of the apartment block is constructed from reinforced concrete, with large windows and openings designed to incorporate the exterior architecture and communal space as features of the home.
‘I intended to make a building like a small city,’ explains architect Takashi Fujino. ‘I hope the residents enjoy each other’s presence like a natural phenomenon.’
LS:N recently reported on a project by Andrés Jaque Architects that engaged with the changing concept of domesticity, a theme we will explore further in our forthcoming macrotrend about the future of the family.
