Kyoto – Japanese architect Keiichi Hayashi has designed the retail space for new cosmetics store Kyoto Silk.
The design was based on an existing traditional Japanese Machiya townhouse. The layout of the original building was retained, and the central section became the shop’s main retail space. A courtyard was created at the back and office space above. The existing wooden frame had to be reinforced with thin steel rods, due to the deterioration of the original structure.
‘I focused on how the function of a cosmetics shop could be complemented by the space limitations of this Machiya,’ explains the architect. ‘The most important thing for this plan is to make the products clear for the customers.’
