US – Bauhaus artist and academic Josef Alber’s textbook Interaction of Color was first published in 1963 and has long been considered a colour theory bible for designers and artists. Now, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, New York design firm Potion, in collaboration with The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation and Yale University Press, have brought the book to life with an interactive iPad app.
The Interaction of Color app contains the original text and colour studies from the book, as well as a colour palette tool that lets users experiment with pigments. The app is also enhanced with archival footage of Alber’s lectures and interviews with preeminent contemporary designers on the use of colour.
‘While the book served decades of students so well, the new app gives us a chance to adapt this classic work to the new digital landscape, taking advantage of technology to enhance the experience Professor Albers intended,’ said John Donatich, director of Yale University Press, in a statement.
