Topsy-turvy: Chinese luxury turned on its head

Shanghai – Luxury brand Hermès has introduced a new brand aimed at the Chinese market. Shang Xia, meaning ‘topsy-turvy’ in Mandarin, will include pared-down luxury items of furniture, clothing, accessories and homeware.

Shang Xia products are inspired by the local craftsmanship of traditional Chinese arts such as weaving and porcelain-making. Furniture has been carved and polished from rare zitan timber. The clothing range includes items that have been hand-woven and felted from cashmere wool. And homeware products include tea sets created from hand-cut solid jade.

As the Chinese luxury market continues to expand, LS:N Global expects to see more China-only subsidiary brands.

For more information on how luxury brands are entering the Chinese market, see our forthcoming Luxury Futures report.
