Resourceful kitchens

27 : 01 : 2017 Ikea : Sustainability : Design

Stockholm – Design studio Form Us With Love has collaborated with Ikea to create kitchen fronts made from recycled plastic bottles.

  • The designs were created to prove plastic bottles are a resource rather than waste
  • For every 40 x 80cm unit, 25 plastic bottles are used along with reclaimed industrial wood

The range, KUNGSBACKA, is designed to show that there is a viable, sustainable alternative to today’s wasteful production processes.

‘A plastic bottle is not waste, it is a resource,’ said Jonas Pettersson, CEO at Form Us With Love in a statement. ‘And most importantly, this kitchen proves that these materials can be used for household goods in large-scale production.’

The kitchen’s primary structure is made of wood, while the coating is made from plastic bottles. Clean cut and modular in their aesthetic, the units have been designed to look timeless and ‘resilient to fashion’. Working hard to also research and overcome the challenge of affordability throughout the design process, the studio says the designs will withstand usage for 25 years or more.

The Big Picture

A number of brands have announced their commitment to sustainability. See how adidas has used plastic bottles to create a range of sustainable sneakers in our Briefing report.
