Dry ice

04 : 08 : 2016 Ice Cream : Convenience Food : New York

New York – Gastronaut Ice Cream is a high-class twist on a childhood favourite.

  • The product comprises organic ice cream that is sprinkled with sea salt before freeze-drying
  • The minimalist packaging is designed to appeal to adults rather than children

The product claims to be the world’s first organic freeze-dried ice cream. Founder Robert Collignon was inspired by his memories of eating cheap freeze-dried ice cream that was sold in space museums. He created his own version at home and was impressed by the flavour that good-quality ice cream retained.

The range comprises three flavours, including Mexican Chocolate Chip, Mint Chocolate Chip and Cookies & Cream. The ice cream, which is sourced from Brooklyn-based Blue Marble, is sprinkled with sea salt before it is freeze-dried to create a unique flavour contrast.

The product’s refined packaging, which features bold typography, is a far cry from the plastic-wrapped alternatives on the market, and is geared towards the luxury food sector. ‘I want to make astronaut ice cream that will be of interest to more than just five-year-olds,’ Collignon told Munchies.

The Big Picture

High-end offers from brands such as Gastronaut and Jalm&B are transforming the image of frozen food. Look out for our forthcoming Food and Drink Futures Report to find out more.
