Global – A fresh blend of erotic exploration and culinary culture is replacing the tired tropes of food porn.

  • Art direction and food styling are combining sophisticated gastronomic experiments with online fetishism
  • Advertising is drawing on niche cultural and internet phenomena rooted in Asian cultures

Art directors and stylists are increasingly referencing sensual and erotic imagery, drawing a link between fetishistic practices relating to the body and the act of food preparation and tasting. Daily Fetish by London-based art director Benedetta Martino captures the preparation process of elaborate dishes interjected with visually similar scenes featuring bondage practices.

Advertising is also tapping into this trend, adopting niche internet phenomena such as Mukbang – an online broadcast in which the host eats large quantities of food while interacting with the audience – and turning them into brand communications. In a tribute to the cultural movement, Vogue Korea commissioned New York-based film-makers Tarik Malak and Timothy Douglas to create a tongue-in-cheek haute couture version of a Mukbang broadcast featuring supermodel Jessica Stam.
