London-based designers Rachel Wingfeld and Mathias Gmachl are experts at creating unusual experiential installations. For The Chronarium Sleep Lab they worked with a sleep scientist, a sound artist and a meditation expert to create a silk-draped space filled with different sounds and visuals, as well as hammocks, in which to relax.

A soundtrack by composer Anna Meredith features soothing voices and ambient vibrations, which visitors experience with a spectrum of coloured lighting effects as they recline. The total effect is designed to be a sequence of physical experiences that induce a harmonious mood and reset circadian rhythms.

The overall aesthetic has a biotech feel as physical shapes reminiscent of the human body are brought together using light and sound technologies.

The Big Idea

In the era of The Optimised Self people are increasingly exploring new solutions to counteract the adverse effects of contemporary living. Sleep has become a particular focus, especially across hospitality and personal technology.
