LDF 2015: Up in the clouds

11 : 09 : 2015 Macrotrend : Inspired By Nature : Whole-system Thinking

London Design Festival 2015 – Viennese studio mischer’traxler’s Curiosity Cloud celebrates nature’s surprising moments with a captivating installation.

  • A collaboration with traditional crystal company Lobmeyr and metal-spinners Wilhelm Seidl
  • The installation will feature at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Norfolk House Music Room

The installation comprises 250 hand-blown glass bulbs, each containing a model insect attached to a string and motor. As the viewer approaches, motion sensors trigger the mechanism, causing the insects to ‘come alive’ and emit an intense buzzing noise.

‘Curiosity Cloud is celebrating a moment in nature, capturing our magical fascination with insects, while creating an engaging atmosphere,’ the designers tell LS:N Global.

The piece is part of Small Discoveries, an ongoing collaboration with Perrier-Jouët, which opened with Ephemera at Design Miami/ 2014.

The Big Picture: Curiosity Cloud examines the relationship between mankind and the earth, reflecting the trend for Whole-system Thinking. Keep an eye on LS:N Global’s Seed and Shows section for more stand-out exhibitions and installations from London Design Festival 2015 over the coming weeks.
