Edible art: restaurant feeds the senses

Hong Kong – Multi-sensory art gallery-cum-dining space The Popsy Room has opened in Sheung Wan’s Upper Lascar Row. The immersive space acts as an art gallery by day and transforms into a synaesthetic restaurant in the evening.

Diners at The Popsy Room are treated to a menu inspired by the latest gallery exhibition. Currently, guests are given a nine-course degustation menu created by chef Kaze Lo, who creates gastronomic interpretations of American-Korean artist Jin Meyerson's digital paintings.

The gallery's inaugural exhibition, Meditation and Megrim, engaged all five senses: visitors were encouraged to sniff aromas created by aromatherapist Kat Lai, sip tea and listen to specially created sounds, all inspired by the art on display.

'Involving all five senses will not only allow people to experience the art as a final product, but will also give them better insight into the process and emotions involved in the making of the art,' says the Popsy Room's founder Jennifer Chung.

In the age of over-indulgence, many food designers are creating sensory treats to entice consumers and challenge the way they interact with food. Learn how food can arouse the senses by reading our Foodscapesmicrotrend.
