Venice, Italy – Melting ice cream may not seem to have much in common with sedimentary rock, but it is the point of inspiration for creative collective Studio Fludd’s fourth issue of its self-published booklet Epherema & Miscellenea, entitled Gelatology.
The visually driven risograph explores the ‘visual and conceptual analogies’ between ice cream and geology. The visual connection between melting gelato and the different layers of the Earth’s crust is fully realized in the 100-page booklet. Beneath mixed-media images of semifreddos and rock formations are words from the 1830 publication Principles of Geology by Charles Lyell.
‘Semifreddo cakes, rocky cones and creamy desserts in vibrant colours are models of cause-effect relations and incredibly slow transformations,’ explains the collective. ‘The mixed media technique attempts to evoke the layering of experiences and the metamorphosis of our states of mind.’
This exploration of geology through food on the printed page is a new iteration of our Galactica design direction, where food designers were taking inspiration from the Re-Enlightenment Rising trend to create mineral and planetary-inspired gastronomy.
