Netherlands – Amsterdam-based French architect Sophie Valla has transformed two 1980s petrol stations into a cultural space by adding a light installation.
Consumers are turning to the arts in these economically unstable times and are yearning for cultural centres, as we reported in our Re-enlightenment Rising macrotrend.
The installation, LED Cloud, was created by attaching 60 textile panels underneath the flat roofs of the petrol stations, situated in Amsterdam’s Noorderpark. Each panel, back-lit with an LED-like screen, along with colourful spotlights scattered throughout the roofs, creates an artificial sky effect.
The panels and spotlights are programmed to light up at different times, turning the old petrol stations into a dynamic light show and transforming the derelict space into a national landmark. Concrete furniture and slabs arranged in a pattern on the floor encourage people to visit and engage in social activities.
