London – Branding studio Vonsung has created an ice cream parlour designed to age better. In line with the client’s brief to be artisanal, Vonsung drew attention to the timelessness of the space and the architecture.
The interior of Polka Gelato reflects the ice cream parlour’s location in a historic building in Fitzroy Square through the use of old and new materials, such as concrete and rough limestone.
Creative director Joseph Sung says the boundaries of the interior wall and ceiling were made as permeable as possible to make the shadows more visible. He mixed limestone into the batch and applied a smooth finish to the raw concrete.
‘The result is an interior space that makes you wonder whether you are in an outdoor environment or an interior space,’ says Sung.
The furniture has a strong masculine feel. Bulbous black sofas and cylindrical white stools separate the artisanal atmosphere with playful and dynamic forms.
