Loughborough – Industrial design graduate Jake Tyler presented a vacuum cleaner that uses cardboard packaging for the body of the product, as part of the New Designers 2011 show in London.
The cardboard Vax EV eco vacuum cleaner, designed for cleaning specialists Vax, is assembled from perforated panels incorporated into the packaging design. The product is assembled without glue or fixings – and the user can customise each of the panels to their requirements.
Should any part of the design become damaged or worn, new templates can be downloaded that enable the user to create new panels using discarded household cardboard packaging.
‘I wanted to take the idea of the vacuum cleaner further, to see if I could bring an environmental aspect to the design,’ Tyler tells LS:N Global.
In the Anarconomy Decade designers are increasingly allowing consumers to hack their products to personalise and modify them to suit their requirements.
Look out for LS:N Global’s forthcoming micro market report from New Designers 2011.
