New York – Australian-born artist and illustrator Craig Redman has joined with French design firm LAQ to turn his illustrated Cyclops character, Darcel, into a furniture installation.
This physical form of Darcel is made from resin, wood, lacquered metal, mother-of-pearl and eggshell. Darcel’s eye contains a hidden storage area, similar to the secret compartments in 17th-century furniture. The form of a surrealist cartoon character contrasts with the high-end craftsmanship and materials used.
The New York-based artist created the character to embody aspects of his daily life: ‘Each representation of Darcel is somehow a new path I add to my visual diary,’ he says.
