London – Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio has created the interior for the recently refurbished Restaurant at the Royal Academy.
The design has remained sympathetic to its Regency surroundings, with materials such as marble and velvet used throughout. More modern elements, such as Dixon’s brass Etch Pendant light, or his injection-moulded foam seating, Scoop, juxtapose with the classical setting and use of traditional materials.
The gallery experience has been carefully considered as part of the design process. Areas of the dining space have been inspired by various Royal Academy greats, such as Turner and Sir John Soane, and a large, free-standing glass unit has been installed, to display sculptures and busts from the Academy’s permanent collection.
