Edinburgh – A pop-up exhibition at Edinburgh Airport challenges Scotland’s top designers to reimagine the souvenir.

  • The exhibition is part of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design
  • Due to its aiport location, the exhibition will be exposed to more than 1m passengers during its August run

Local Heroes features a range of specially commissioned objects created by Scottish designers from across the product, fashion, graphic and textile design disciplines. Each designer was asked to produce a travel-themed object that acts as an ad for Scotland’s creative industries and offers a contemporary riff on the souvenir concept.

The contributions, which are all available to buy, include fashion designer Karen Mabon’s Rain Dance umbrella, a one-shouldered swimsuit by Rebecca Torres and a travel blanket by Hilary Grant that blends Nordic and Scottish knitting patterns.

‘For many passengers, Local Heroes will be their first impression of Scotland and will also form part of a fond farewell,’ curator Dr Stacey Hunter said in a statement. ‘Design is one of the most accessible expressions of 21st-century creativity and I am so excited that we can present a snapshot of Scotland’s colourful and confident design scene at such a unique location.’

The Big Picture

Initiatives such as Local Heroes and USIO Design Project are catering for the demand for products that are linked to specific places and communities. Read our New Bricolage Living macrotrend to find out more.
