Joyous occasion

08 : 03 : 2016 Explorium Retail : Transpierences : Fragrance

New York – Independent fragrance design studio Joya has opened its first store, which celebrates the behind-the-scenes making process.

  • The space features suspended display walls that enable visitors to see into the factory
  • Guests are encouraged to linger and learn more about the production process

Joya was founded by Frederick Bouchardy in 2006, but the New York flagship store is its first retail location. The space features the company’s own fragrances and candles alongside collaborative products from brands such as Snarkitecture and Calico.

Visitors are encouraged to wander around the fully operational factory that sits behind the store’s floating display shelves, and observe staff as they work to develop fragrances, candles and ceramics.

‘The basic concept in a way represents what we do – the cast/mould relationship. The shelves hold the things that are precious and pretty. One side is refined and perfect, and the other is industrial and rough,’ Bouchardy told Women’s Wear Daily. ‘We could just as easily have taken old furniture and set up shop here. We didn’t want there to be a separation between retail and manufacturing.’

Joya will offer tours, workshops, salons, masterclasses from visiting perfumers and art installations to further immerse visitors in the brand.

The Big Picture

Brands are creating retail spaces that encourage consumers to linger and get lost in their world. For more, see our Explorium Retail microtrend.
