Stockholm Design Week 2016: Asian alliance

16 : 02 : 2016 Iitala : Issey Miyake : Pause For Harmony

Stockholm – Japanese fashion house Issey Miyake has collaborated with Finnish interior designers Iitala on a series of homewares.

  • The collaboration combines Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism, enabling both brands to show their skills
  • The Pause for Harmony collection comprises 30 textile, ceramic and glass pieces for the home

Issey Miyake and his team are well known for their love of pleating and the collaboration invited them to apply the same techniques from their fashion collection to more functional, everyday objects.

Its cushions, for example, were made using steam to pleat the fabric into origami-like patterns that won’t lose their shape.

Iitala, which began as a glassmaker, applied its decades of expertise to create a simple, yet striking vase and ceramic plates. The Pause for Harmony collection was launched at last week’s Stockholm Design Week and was shown at the Wetterling Gallery.

The Big Picture

Scandinavian and Japanese designers have struck up an alliance in recent years, inspired by a mutual appreciation for minimalism. In 2015 interior architect André Fu created a Zen garden-inspired catwalk for Swedish retailer COS.
