Las Vegas – MasterCard has launched a shopping app in conjunction with Samsung’s Family Hub Refrigerator, ushering in an era where necessities such as milk and eggs are taken care of intuitively.

: The smart refrigerator is preloaded with the Groceries by MasterCard app, which enables users to order items through a touchscreen interface on the refrigerator door

: Adds an extra layer of convenience to the grocery shopping experience

The smart system analyses the shopping and consumption habits of the household and automatically suggests items based on its observations. The service will later expand to offer recipe tips and tutorials, according to MasterCard.

The technology has the potential to make consumers’ interactions with technology more seamless. ‘Imagine your washing machine or dishwasher sending a request to a retailer to buy more detergent because it knows that you have done 25 cycles and wants to make sure you are never without the things you need,’ says Betty DeVita, chief commercial officer at MasterCard Labs. ‘The Internet of Things, merged with commerce, can remove friction in our everyday lives.’

The Big Picture

The collaboration heralds an important step towards the realisation of the connected home. As appliances become linked to retailers, mega-systems must look to collaborate when innovating.
