Food for thought

24 : 11 : 2015 Fernando Laposse : Totomoxtle : Food Designer

Oaxaca, Mexico – Fernando Laposse has created a thought-provoking installation after completing a six-week residency on the topic of food.

  • Celebrates the diverse flavours and rich colours of criollo corn, a local Oaxacan crop
  • Highlights the tension between local and global production processes

Combining references from the worlds of food and art, Fernando Laposse’s series of objects relate to the traditional practice of grinding corn, which is dying out as faster, more advanced methods are increasingly adopted. ‘I wanted to raise awareness of the devastating effects that aggressive global economics is having on local agriculture,’ Laposse tells LS:N Global.

The emblematic structures were assembled by creating a matrix of different tones using thousands of ground corn husks with unique textures, colours and patterns. These were laser cut into a repeating pattern and arranged like a puzzle. Traditional corn milling tools such as grinding stones and handheld pestles were combined to create elegant, totemic forms.

The Big Picture

Laposse’s conceptual approach to Whole-system Thinking examines the effect of global economics on the diversity of local agriculture.
