Chengdu, China – To preserve the heritage of the rapidly expanding city of Chengdu, Swire Hotels has launched The Temple House hospitality complex.
The complex, which consists of a boutique hotel, café, gourmet restaurant, wellness centre and outdoor public spaces, is built in close proximity to several historic sites, including the 1,000-year-old Daci temple and restored Qing Dynasty building.
In order to preserve the traditional architectural styles of the local area, the architects incorporated similar themes into the interior and exterior of the complex, and the courtyards have been landscaped to resemble terraced paddy fields.
The Big Picture: This is another great example of designers taking a chameleon-like approach to materials and design details in order to fit in to the local surroundings. See more examples in our Crafted Locale design direction.
